April Meeting

April 8, 2027 at 1:30:00 PM

Location:

2131 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14618, USA

Pamela Weeks
Program

Designing Women

Quilts have been the focus for Pamela Weeks for more than half of her life. She joyfully explores the many facets of this ancient and always exciting craft. Pamela started making quilts as a result of the craft revival inspired by the Bicentennial in 1976. Like many of that era, she made traditional quilts with the limited calicos available.

By the mid-1980’s Pamela was designing her own work, and considered herself an art quilter. She made quilts based in tradition with an emphasis on non-traditional color. A class with Nancy Crow sent her into the world of hand-dyed fabrics and improvisational quilts.

In 1991 Pamela meandered down a different avenue when she took a class on reproducing the antique quilts she loved but couldn’t afford, and she was hooked on quilt history. Who knew that this would lead to research on “potholder” quilts, and even the Civil War? Her first book was published in 2013 on Civil War quilts made for soldiers. Her next book will be out soon.

As the Binney Family Curator of the New England Quilt Museum, Pamela has the job of her dreams. She works with many different quilters, collectors, institutions, and co-conspirators to plan exhibits for the museum, and research the quilts in the museum's collection. Pamela says, "I'm having so much fun!"
