GENESEE VALLEY QUILT CLUB
Rochester, NY
Meeting Day Program
March 20, 2025
Christine Wickert, GVQC member, is a mainly self taught traditional quilt artist. She has been quilting since the 1980’s and is an active member of the Genesee Valley Quilt Club in Rochester, NY.
Her many prizes include three Best of Shows at the Vermont Quilt Festival (2012, 2014, 2016), one Best of Show at AQS Lancaster (2013), one Best of Show at Pennsylvania Quilt Extravaganza (2023) and two Best Wall Hand Workmanship at AQS Paducah (2019, 2023). Her silk quilts were part of three special exhibits at the New England Quilt Museum (2013, 2017, 2019).
She has conducted a quilt residency with elementary school children in the Webster NY School District under the auspices of Young Audiences of Rochester (2001), given trunk shows of her quilts at various venues in New York State and Massachusetts, and teaches silk appliqué workshops across the country.
Her traditional quilts are often adaptations of designs by well known quilt artists. Hand appliqué and hand quilting continue to be her favorite techniques and indeed define her style. Christine lives in Penfield, NY.
Program - Chris Wickert
Chris will show about 25 quilts, many of which are made of silk as she documents the history of her evolving style and expertise, and show how other quilt artists have influenced her.
Workshop - Chris Wickert
March 21: "Gilding the Lily" Note: This workshop is FULL
In this full day workshop students will learn various ways to embellish quilts by using embroidery and beading as well as by adding new elements to the quilt’s body and/or border. Many ideas will be presented using Christine’s quilts and demonstrations of strategies. Students will receive a blank piece of fabric as a “canvas” and start to create their own sampler of embellishment designs.
