Meeting Day Program

November 14, 2024

November 2024

Rachel Derstine is an award winning fiber artist living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her works are featured in invitational and juried gallery shows and fine art/craft shows throughout the country. She has had articles published in Machine Quilting Unlimited and Art Quilting Studio magazines. Her work has been purchased and installed in institutions such as Epic Corporation in Madison, WI, and the Milton Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.

Having grown up in Japan, this influence is evident in her style and use of kimonos, silks, ikats, hand dyed and batik fabrics. She includes traditional techniques of quilting as well as her own contemporary methods. She does all her piecing, applique and couching on a domestic sewing machine and her quilting on a long arm quilting machine.

Rachel primarily uses hand dyed or painted cottons, silks and nonwovens but also has a love of Asian fabrics and kimono silks, incorporating these ancient traditional fabrics into her compositions. Use of sheers, couching and fabric paints give a sense of depth and texture. Slightly curving lines portray gracefulness and circles are often present representing wholeness and creativity.

Workshops by Rachel Derstine

November 15: "Artful Couching"

Learn the art of couching with yarns to create texture, flow and extra pizzazz.  This is a full day or half day class, depending on if the students come with a completed quilt sandwich on which to do the couching. We which will focus exclusively on mastering couching techniques.  Students will bring a striped batik or gradient fabric or purchase fabric in class to make this 18″ x 45″ table runner size quilt.  This class will show you the many ways to use couching for definition and sparkle, by incorporating a variety of cording, yarns and metallic threads in your work.

November 16: "Architecture Quilts"

A full day workshop learning to create architecture quilts in which use of proper perspective is taught. You will be sent instructions on how to resize a photo to your desired dimensions and create a pattern before class. It is important that you choose an image which is not too complicated in this one day class.

In this class we will use fused raw edge applique technique to create our quilts.

A Micron pen will be used to define edges and create shading around windows and doorways. Basic straight stitching with monofilament or matching thread will be used to stitch down all the elements before quilting.

Quilting ideas and facing technique will be discussed and demonstrated in class.

The supply list has suggestions of sources for good fabric choices. Remember that we are not going for complete realism but wish to play up the fun and vibrancy of our buildings.
